UPF Rating vs. Fabric Construction Matrix

Overview

A construction matrix study measuring UPF rating across weave density and yarn count combinations, to separate structural from chemical UV protection.

Problem

UV protection in textiles is usually achieved by adding chemical absorbers, which increases cost and processing steps.

Objective

Determine whether fabric construction alone can reach UPF 50+ without any chemical treatment.

Methodology

A matrix of 12 plain-weave cotton fabrics varying in yarn count (20s-40s) and cover factor, each rated for UPF per AS/NZS 4399 with no chemical finish applied.

Materials

Grey cotton fabric samples woven to specification, standard UV spectrophotometer for UPF rating.

Experimental Design

Full factorial design across 3 yarn counts and 4 cover factors, with 2 replicate samples per cell.

Results

Pending — sample weaving is scheduled before testing begins.

Conclusion

Pending experimental data.

Future Work

If structure alone proves sufficient at practical cover factors, extend to blended fibers relevant to summer apparel.
