Enzymatic Bio-Scouring for Cotton — Literature Review
Reviewing enzyme-based and alkaline scouring as alternative process routes
Overview
A literature review of pectinase-based and alkaline cotton scouring; no scouring trials were conducted for this project.
Problem Statement
Cotton scouring removes noncellulosic impurities. Comparing enzymatic and alkaline routes requires evidence on absorbency, fabric weight loss and wastewater characteristics.
Objective
Review whether published comparisons address the trade-offs between pectinase-based and alkaline scouring.
Review approach
Literature review of the process comparison; no original scouring or effluent measurements were performed.
Materials discussed (not used)
Materials discussed in the proposed approach, not personally used: cotton grey fabric, pectinase formulation and an alkaline NaOH bath.
Proposed Experimental Approach
Proposed experimental approach only: parallel scouring of matched fabric lots, with replicate runs per route and comparison of weight loss, absorbency and effluent COD/BOD. Replicate count and laboratory protocol have not been confirmed.
Literature Findings
Literature findings: the reviewed topic identifies absorbency, weight loss and effluent load as comparison endpoints. No verified source and conditions are available here for a quantitative COD reduction claim; no project measurements exist.
Interpretation
Interpretation: enzymatic scouring is a potential alternative worth comparing under matched conditions; this review does not establish equivalent performance or a lower effluent load.
Next steps (proposed)
Proposed, not performed: agree on matched-pair trials, replicate count, measurement methods and cost comparison before experimental work.
